Lu the Hippo

Lu the Hippo lives at Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park. Lu was born in 1960, and has lived there most of his entire life. He is one of the oldest hippos in captivity! In his early days Lu was a TV star on shows like Daktari and the Jack Linkletter Show. When Homosassa Springs because a Florida State Park in 1989, people worried that Lu would have to leave the park because he is not a native Florida animal. They told the Governor how much they loved Lu and didn’t want him to go. The Governor made Lu an official citizen of Florida so that he could stay in the park.
