Thousands of Monarchs in Pacific Grove, CA

Monarch Grove Sanctuary, Pacific Grove, California

Monarch Butterfly Cluster

Thousands of Monarch butterflies spend winter clustered on the trees in Pacific Grove, California (near Monterey).  By March the butterflies fly north with the spring.  Each generation of butterflies flies further north, laying eggs along the way.  By November a new generation of butterflies returns south to Pacific Grove to spend the winter.  The town is so proud of its butterflies that it is nicknamed “Butterfly Town USA”.  Every fall a special parade features children dressed as butterflies to celebrate the return of the Monarchs.
