Rare Florida Fox Squirrel Sighting

Florida Fox Squirrel

Fox Squirrels are rarely seen, and a species of special concern in Florida.  Currently the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission is collecting data on fox squirrel sightings, and the public is invited to participate. We saw and submitted our sighting yesterday of a Fox Squirrel, Sherman subspecies, near Three Lakes.  Adult fox squirrels are over twice as large as Eastern grey squirrels – up to 2 1/2 feet long. The fox squirrel’s long body and low movement along the ground make it look like a fox or badger at first glance.  More info is at:  http://myfwc.com/wildlifehabitats/profiles/mammals/land/fox-squirrel/

Thanks for posting this! I used your link to add some sightings to the survey! I have seen a lot of these this year, didnt know what they were… and didn’t know they were rare! Tonight I will bring my camera!

We had these squirrels in our yard at our bird feeder in Orlando, FL, in 1994, near the University of Central Florida. After all of the homes were built, they disappeared. They were as big as a thin house cat.

Stopped along 475 in Sumter County just north of SR44 when spotting a strange looking rodent. It was reddish brown with a bushy tail and white nose. Identified it as a fox squirrel when reviewing Florida rodents. First time to see a fox squirrel. What a thrill!

How exciting! Really glad to hear about it! 🙂
We didn’t know what to think when we first saw our fox squirrel. Didn’t make sense that a river otter might be where we saw it. They are a real treat to see!

  4. Elena De Bello says:

We have it at Starkey Ranch in Odessa.
