Purple Martin Pair

Purple Martin Pair

Look who just flew in from Brazil – a pair of purple martins ready to start the nesting season! The male is in the gourd on the left, the female is sitting on the gourd on the right, and a plastic decoy sits on top. Spring is on its way!  Current purple martin sightings are tallied at:  http://purplemartin.org/scoutreport/

    Interesting ‘nests’… artificial… I guess?

    • Pam says:

Yes, these are plastic “gourds”. You can use natural ones too. This tradition goes far back in time in North America. The martins eat lots of insects. Today it is important to provide nesting sites because development has greatly reduced the availability of natural tree cavities. These birds are such a joy to have around – constantly singing with feathers that shine glossy purple in the sun.
