Great Blue Herons are nesting now in Florida! Nest building can take up to 2 weeks. Generally, a male blue heron will bring sticks to the female, and she will build the nest. These majestic birds usually nest in colonies. We counted at least six active nests recently at the Viera Wetlands.

    Pam, the pictures of the Herons going in and out of the nest are simply spectacular! Send them off to National Geographic. They’re wonderful.

    Wonderful images! You made me remember a heron rookery we visited a few years ago down along the Ohio River. I think I’ll ask hubby if we can make a return trip to check on them. 😉
