St. Francis and the Wolf of Gubbio

St. Francis and the Wolf of Gubbio, Santa Ines Mission, Solvang, California. St. Francis of Assisi is well known for his compassion and love of animals. A famous story describes how he tamed and blessed a wolf near the town of Gubbio, Italy. St. Francis arranged the first Christmas manger scene in 1223. Many churches hold ceremonies blessing animals on his feast day of October 4. Our current Pope (2013) is named after this important religious figure.
