Thingeyrarkirkja Stone Entrance

Thingeyrarkirkja Church’s Stone Entrance, near town of Blonduos, north of Reykjavik, Iceland. The church is a only short drive from the Ring Road, but the turnoff is easy to miss. It is one of the few churches made of volcanic stone. Although volcanic rock is readily available in Iceland, it was rarely used in the past because the cost of mortar was too high. The interior has a stunning blue ceiling with gold stars. The church has an adjacent small visitor center (go inside and the historian on duty will open the church to give you a tour). This very historic church is remote, but highly recommended; it is very much worth a visit – one of our absolute favorites. Read more at:
