Roman Tombstone Honoring Pet Dog Helena (150-200 AD)

Roman Tombstone Honoring Pet Dog Helena (150-200 AD). Getty Villa, Malibu/Pacific Palisades, California. One of best places/museums to visit in the Los Angeles area. Descriptive sign says “The inscription on this gravestone reads: To Helena, foster daughter, incomparable and praiseworthy soul.” It is unclear, however, whether the monument commemorates a girl or a dog named Helena. The dog’s prominence within the elaborate architectural setting supports the idea that the gravestone honors an adored pet that was regarded as a family member.”
