Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument is a beautiful place to visit just north of Flagstaff, Arizona.  The sunset colors reflect the volcano’s composition of silica, iron oxide, and gypsum.  The volcano erupted about 1040-1100 AD .  It is amazing how life returns and survives on the tough conditions of the lava flow!  Information about visiting is at:  https://www.nps.gov/sucr/index.htm  and https://www.livescience.com/50237-sunset-crater-photos.html

As many times as we’ve driven past Sunset Crater, we’ve never taken the time to stop in and explore. We need to make it a point next time.

You should! It was a perfect place to take a break, and the air was cool. I liked looking for the little signs of life on the lava.

We visited Craters of the Moon in Idaho during wildflower season, and I fell in love with all the tiny delicate blooms. Quite fascinating. Now I’ll need to figure out what month is good for flowers at Sunset Crater ☺

Another great place to visit! The flowers at Sunset were just at the very beginning of growth at the end of April, so I would imagine about now would be good.
