Florida: Rocket Launch this Week

Long Exposure of Night Launch in Florida

We watched a beautiful launch from Cape Canaveral here on the Space Coast of Florida at 12:15 am on Wednesday morning (October 17,  2018).  It was a warm starry night as the ULA Atlas V rocket soared across the sky.  The advanced communications satellite successfully reached orbit about 3.5 hours later.

  1. Melanie says:

I’m always up after midnight, but of course there was a night launch the one day I went to bed early.

  2. Wow! Super! Did you hear its sound?

    • Pam says:

Oh yes! We live 45 miles south and it takes a few minutes for the sound to reach us. But on warm humid nights you can hear the launch rumble quite well!

      • What’s it like? A fighter jet?

        • Pam says:

If you could get close enough it would be, but it is something more like continuous thunder. Years ago when the space shuttle was still flying and there weren’t so many restrictions, we stood in a park near the end of the shuttle runway when it landed. That WAS like a fighter jet going over!

  3. Stunning capture, Pam! I bet the noise was awesome too!

  4. Gorgeous picture! I am so jealous because I took my son to Florida many, many years ago. We drove to watch a launch and it got down to 10 seconds and they cancelled it!!!!! Never had the opportunity again.😔
