The pincushion flowers at the University of California Santa Cruz Arboretum are spectacular! These evergreen shrubs in the genus Leucospermum originated in South Africa. Proteas are one of the Earth’s oldest families of flowering plants. The flower structures are incredibly complex and interesting, and heavy nectar attracts birds and insects. So beautiful!
Thanks! They are amazing flowers!
Fantastic!
They are the prettiest!
Aren’t they lovely!
We love it and always visit when we are in the Bay Area.
Hi. I’ve been in Santa Cruz many times, but never to this arboretum. It’s now on my list. Take care.

Oh yay! I haven’t even mentioned the abundant hummingbirds in this post (next one coming). You’ll love it!
So pretty and unique!
Very cool! I’ve never seen them before!
They are very unusual – quite the show stoppers!
Stunning captures, Pam! The image of the Perry’s Orange grouping looks like a fireworks display!
Thank you! I always thought it looked like fireworks too! 🙂
Such great shots! Though I do not think Leucospermum Bouquet is a real name even if fitting. Maybe Leucospermum erubescens?
Oh thanks for the scientific name tip! I couldn’t figure out what it was so I just called the grouping a “bouquet”. This is great! 🙂
Updated now – Huge thanks to you!!!
